Hello Slinger wrestling fans

Well, the season is almost here and I am excited for another fun year in Slinger Wrestling. It is hard to believe but I am starting my 24th season as Slinger’s Head Wrestling Coach, and it might sound corny but I am just as pumped and raring to go as my first years as coach, only I now have a lot less hair. And just like many of my previous seasons I once again am really blessed to have a great bunch of young men to work with.

This year I again have one of my largest squads, just short of 50 kids, with 8 seniors, 10 juniors, 15 sophomores and 15 freshman. I realize those numbers might drop a bit (wrestling is a pretty tough sport you know) but it is still is a great number to start with. This year’s team will be lead by our Senior Captains, Jake Zenner (189), Owen Ciriacks (145/152) and Jake Schall (285). These three guys are “workers” and I’m sure they will pass that on to the rest of the team. The trio just finished up a successful football season having all received All-Conference recognition. And to top it off, Jake Schall was named the teams Offensive MVP and Owen was the Defensive MVP. It looks like working hard pays off in more than one sport.

Who’s coaching this season? First there’s Bruce Tonsor, Bruce has been with me for I think about 20 years. I guess you could call him an “old school” coach, back in the day he was an All- American for River Falls. I’m told in those days they wore animal skins and wrestled on dirt floors. Then there is Tim Kramoris. I met Tim at on Old Timers tournament back in 1990 and soon after talked him into coaching here at Slinger and he has been with us ever since. Tim lives, eats and breathes Slinger Wrestling and has a done a lot for the program at the youth level, high School level and now for many years at the High School. In his Second year at the SHS is Shane Becker. Shane was a former Hartford wrestler, (I am pretty sure he now bleeds Red and Blue instead of orange and black). So we are happy to have him back. Also helping out will be Kyle Roessler (pronounced “Wrestler”, what a great name for coach!) former Slinger wrestler from ’08. And then I am really excited to have a new Head high School Coach, Paul Maternowski, Paul was standout wrestler at Pewaukee HS and then wrestled some at Carroll College. The best descriptors of Paul would be “Energetic, Enthusiastic, and Conscientious”, I’m excited about what he can bring to the high School program. Assisting Paul are two of last year’s team Captains: Bobby Schwai and Tony Kanas. Both are excellent young guys that I am thrilled to still have as part of our program.

Our competitive Season will be off to a bang soon with a Friday night home dual meet against West Bend West on Dec. 4th and then the next day we are at home in our annual 11 team, Gun-Slinger Invitational. Then to round out the end of the season, we will be hosting Regionals, on Feb 13 followed by our Red Rhino Youth Open on Sunday Feb 14th.
